Dev Blog: Holdings & Outposts

Holdings and Outposts
  • Swamplands: High Fish rating, average Wood, Game, and Ore ratings, but terrible in Fish and Herds.

  • I'm going to assume that this should be Stone?

EDIT: This was already answered. Move along, these aren't the words you are looking for.

Croplands: Highest Crops rating, high Herds rating, average Ore rating, but terrible in Fish and Game.

What about the resources not listed? i.e. Are Croplands average at Stone & Wood, or are those resources entirely absent, with lower ratings than even fish?

Thanks, Lee. That makes sense, and rewards companies who "keep the weeds trimmed".

If you just have a company running holdings you have no armor feats, no class features, etc.

Good to know. Presumably class feats & armor feats will never be available from holdings, then, and will always (as currently planned) require investment at the settlement level to support them? Are there plans for faction-related holdings or outposts that may offer armor or class feats?

    Just to clarify:

1- Can you make different versions of a holding/outpost? Holding (Watchtower) +0, Holding (Watchtower) +1…

2- Are you encouraging builders to specialize in one construction skill (one PC each for engineer, carpenter and stonemason) or or multiple skills (one PC a stonemason and carpenter)?

3- Can you be a manager, a Forman and a worker on different structures in the same hex if you company owns a holding and 2 different outputs by careful management of your construction queue?

4- Does one company have to build all the holdings and outposts in a single hex, or can each structure be built by a separate company if they all belong to the same settlement (perhaps due to lack of sufficiently Influence or members)?

5- Can a size 20 (or so) company build a Watchtower (or other defense structure) multiple hexes away from its settlement (say 3-12 hexes distance)?

A Company can only build Outposts if they control a hex via the Holding in that hex.

Does that mean that basically each company builds and manages all the structures in a hex, and that a settlement needs at least 6 different companies to manages it core 6 hexes surrounding the settlement?

A single company can presumably control as many hexes as they have the influence for. For a company of 30 (easy math) with a 1500 Inf cap, I would guess controlling three fully-upgraded hexes would consume much of their total Inf, but not all, still leaving room for feuds, etc. The current numbers we've seen are 100 Inf per Holding and 50 Inf per Outpost.

    Just to clarify:

1- Can you make different versions of a holding/outpost? Holding (Watchtower) +0, Holding (Watchtower) +1…
Yep. Since it uses the crafting system, holding and outpost kits come out with the full range of plus values. We're still cycling on exactly what bonus establishing a holding or outpost with an upgraded kit gets you, but there will be an advantage to making the kit with better materials.

2- Are you encouraging builders to specialize in one construction skill (one PC each for engineer, carpenter and stonemason) or or multiple skills (one PC a stonemason and carpenter)?
Theoretically, if patient enough, one Engineer could make all the holdings and outposts for the entire game: the Engineer makes the kits, and then they can be traded to others to be deployed much like smallholdings. Practically, they're T2 items with crafting times comparable to T2 weapons, and you'll need a new kit when the buildings are destroyed (destruction system not arriving immediately), so there will likely be a decently large need for multiple Engineers to work on them initially and then a smaller ongoing need to make new ones as groups take new territories or lose buildings to enemies.

Carpenter and Stonemason are not yet involved in the holdings and outposts. They are more likely to be needed for buildings within settlements.

3- Can you be a manager, a Forman and a worker on different structures in the same hex if you company owns a holding and 2 different outputs by careful management of your construction queue?
You can only have one "day job" globally. If you're a manager somewhere, you can't be a foreman or laborer, if you're a foreman you can't be a laborer or manager, etc. It's independent of where you're assigned. You can think of it as representing what your character is doing while you're logged out.

4- Does one company have to build all the holdings and outposts in a single hex, or can each structure be built by a separate company if they all belong to the same settlement (perhaps due to lack of sufficiently Influence or members)?
Long term, the goal is to let companies "sub-let" a hex and build outposts under the authority of an allied company that controls the holding, but I don't know if that will be available soon.

5- Can a size 20 (or so) company build a Watchtower (or other defense structure) multiple hexes away from its settlement (say 3-12 hexes distance)?
Initially, most likely yes. There was a big discussion yesterday on the pros and cons of trying to enforce settlement territory being contiguous, but I don't think if we do anything on that score it will be soon (because the tech overhead is large even if everyone agreed it was good to do).
