The Importance of Deciding What Settlement/Company to Join BEFORE you start playing

HowardWdW
This is aimed at anyone starting a character from scratch. The most important entity in the game is the Company to which your character will belong and the Settlement to which that company is pledged. Characters earn Influence WHEN THEY ARE PART OF A COMPANY. Large portions of Influence are earned from the early stages of play. There is a mathematical formula in the dev blog on Influence which shows the calculation
https://goblinworks.com/blog/the-arrival-of-influence/

To maximize your contribution to Influence choose and join a company and settlement at the beginning of your adventuring career. Pathfinder University is a great place to learn to play the game, but you don't have to be a member of their companies to participate in their activities. In addition, the Company and Settlement you choose to play with is also quite capable of helping you learn to play this quite complex game.

There is high value to your future company in getting your influence as soon as possible, because influence accumulates faster when you are new character than it ever will later, but I disagree that new players need to rush.

Most active companies will be at or near their maximum influence most of the time. When any new player joins, they will gain an expansion of their cap that has nothing to do with how experienced your character is, and once the cap is expanded, every character in the company will be able to contribute to that fresh. How fast that character is earning influence will have minimal effect on the company's earned influence.

I agree with Caldeathe. Influence potential is not a good reason to rush into choosing a company. Joining a company is pretty important for having more context and goals in the game, though. And most companies will be happy to help newbies learn the ropes.

This should either be in the recruiting sub-forum or have the last paragraph removed. Fairly disingenuous otherwise imo.

That said are there any active companies who aren't at the influence cap already? It seems like a really silly reason, to me, to rush such an important decision as finding an 'in game' home.

NEW PLAYERS: I urge you to not worry about influence at all when searching for a company compared to the issue of finding group of like minded gamers you enjoy playing with. Talk to people. Get involved with PFU. Browse the recruiting sub-forums and ask the questions to recruiters in general chat offering to have you whisper them.

IMO the last thing you need to worry about is where a companies influence is at - we have enough already and we want you for you, not for a few ticks in a company's currency counter.

Non-issue, we're influence capped with not a lot of effort. Concern is overblown, especially if you join one of the bigger companies, their cap will have diminishing returns. Learn the game and what you might be interested in before you make a decision, settlement and company hopping can be difficult later based on alignment and support restrictions.

This isn't very informative.

If you are a new player there are a few things that you should consider when joining a company or settlement:

1. What will be the companies/settlements future alignment?
2. What is the companies/settlements play style/focus?
3. What future training will the company/settlement support?
4. What are the companies/settlements political leanings? power bloc? rules(or no rules)?
5. What are the operating hours of the company/settlement?
6. What kind of economy does the company/settlement support?
7. What roles does the company/settlement need?
There are a lot more important factors than influence.
Brighthaven is a Neutral Good settlement focused on defending its citizens and its allies from negative fringe based PvP (Player Killing and Griefing) while striving to become a large and shining beacon for Good. Whether you wish to benefit from this protection or you love PvP and wish to assist in providing this protection, Brighthaven aims to be the home and support center for you!

Also .. if you have signed up with a few friends from the same timezone and you have a total of 6 or more characters between you including 1000 point alts (6 is the minimum for gaining influence though 10 or more is better) a viable alternative is form your own company and look for a settlement to attach yourself to.
