Dear NewCorp

This XP system and current mechanics do not lend themselves to FTP. Hello armies of crafting alts until 'release'. Some fairly significant changes would need to be put into place to avoid things getting out of hand.

That's a good point. I think there should be some sort of incentive to get people to play during development, though, and it has to be a lot better than what's already been offered - this game would be so amazing if the 20,000 people that Ryan Dancey claimed would play EE actually existed.

What about if F2P was offered during EE and exp stopped at a certain point? Say, somewhere around when T2 would be obtained. Unfortunately, the way keywords work, when someone ticks over to T2 they automatically already have T2+2 capability, which may be too much to give out to a F2P account.

So a free trial that stops at a certain point.

We already have that.

Most players who stop playing do so after day 1. I don't have hard numbers for that - but this is my impression. There also never was a big surge when the game allowed 15 day free trials.

We have to face it - in the current climate the game has a very bad reputation. Some of it deserved - some being harked upon by disgruntled players who had different expectations and who went from supporters to distractors. At times ;ole that it is difficult to ho out and recruit.
Keep also in mind this is a game where you plan a very long time in advance. Not knowing if the game will be running in 3 month time will deter someone to start.

There is nothing current GW can do to halt this until an announcement is made.

Thod/Theodum are the OOC/IC leaders of the Emerald Lodge - a neutral settlement in the center of the mal that tries to the first to explore the Emerald Spire - should that part of the game ever become available. We have a strong in game and out of game relationship with the Pathfinder Society.
We welcome both hard core players as well as casual players with or without tabletop experience. We have a strong group in Europe and are slowly expanding into the US. We are predominately PvE as our neutral political stance means that we tend to use PvP only in self-defence. We are not anti-PVP - but expect limited PvP opportunity with us.

*IF* we want a bunch of people playing before the game is up to snuff, one way to do it is to make the game free for EVERYONE (not just new arrivals), until Open Enrollment. The way to prevent people from making dozens of crafters while it is free is to make sure every account has paid at least a $100 in advance, just like what most of us paid to join EE.

There is no sense in making those of us who have already bought and subscribed… subsidize new players. Of course, if we all play for free until OE, then Newcorp is basically subsidizing everyone until OE. Of course, that's what all beta tests used to do, and they didn't even used to require advance purchases.

I'm not advocating that free play is a solution to PFO's problems, but if there is going to be free play, then it ought to be as fair to the existing customers as it is to new ones.

It may not have been clear, but I was originally suggesting that all players be able to play for free for the remainder of EE. I guess in that case any prepayment would be deferred and applied after OE begins. Requiring people to make a purchase up front to begin their free to play period is an interesting idea, actually, but $100 is a bit steep. Even though almost all of us put in at least that much, some of us much much more, the climate has changed. This game desperately needs new players, and lots of them.

IF F2P is an option to be decided on it should be VERY limiting;
as in they can ONLY get level 6 support(same as Rotters Hole),
can not join a settlement or company,
can not go more then 6 hexes from ThornKeep

This will stop the crafter storm since none can get higher then T1

I'm seeing a lot of protectionist suggestions regarding a business call.

Would all the same objections apply to a lower subscription price, such as $5/month or less? Granted, raising the price point is likely to result in massive losses at that time, but probably not as much as raising them from "free".

Once the game reaches a reasonable state to keep players, general marketing can bring in enough players to crowd the current map.

While it is a business call it's pretty intrinsically tied to the game's mechanics too. It's a huge controversy when more nefarious mechanical decisions are made to support a dubious business call.
