New to game looking for a company to join

I don't think you'll have a hard time finding a company or settlement smile There are several settlements/power blocs that are active, so a good question for you is how you envision your character? Good guy-type or bandit/villain? Any particular class you have in mind? Some settlements have particular themes/alignments and ways of playing, so if you want to be a bandit, some settlements might be a better choice than others that are a stronghold of paladins and clerics.

I am playing as a rogue, as for being a good or bad guy… are they any benefits to being a bad guy compared to good? i know villian type characters get attacked instantly in certain npc towns but what would some benefits be to playing as a bad guy instead of a good guy? and is the only way to becoming a bad guy just through player killing? or are there other mechanics that can affect your reputation?

Right now, there aren't any hardwired benefits to your alignment. Eventually that will probably change, affecting clerics probably the most and some weapon feat availability. The only real mechanic that governs player behavior is Reputation. If you kill a player your company doesn't have a feud with, you will lose reputation. If you lose too much reputation, you will be attacked by Thornguards, and the only town you can enter and not be attacked is Rotter's Hole. That is a big deal when you are a young character, less of an issue when you are an older character. Over time you gain rep back, so you aren't permanently attacked unless you continue to lose rep. Currently, unsanctioned PVP (or aiding someone in unsanctioned PVP)is the only way to lose rep. Hopefully in the future, other things will also affect rep.

Paddy and his not-so-merry band of bandits hail from Dun Baille, and would be the group to talk to if the bandit thing is your jam.

I will probably go for the good guy route right now then haha was just curious. thanks for the info much appreciated
As far as groups go I always encourage all new players to check out each group's web sites and see which one would fit best.

Just to name a few:
The Dominion occupy the North and are the closest settlements to Thornkeep. -

If you are into banditry (and since you are interested in PvP) The folk at Dun Baile might be a good fit contact Paddy or checkout their site here:

The Aeonian League are located in the south west and can be checked out here:

The group I am with are part of Keeper's Pass in the south east and can be checked out by the link in my signature line below.

I am pretty sure all groups would welcome a new player with open arms.
"Circles of power, gathered by EARTH, welcomed by GOLD, in strife and in mirth. Focused by CRYSTAL, guided by LIGHT, showing the way, by day and by night. wrought in IRON, strengthened by STEEL, together we stand, in wrack and in weal. Hidden in SHADOW, explored by WOOD, we circle together, for the greater good." –Maxikyd–
awesome, this is the exact kind of post i was hoping for. thank you good sir!
The Brighthaven Alliance, also located in the south-east, is always welcoming of new players, and strive to be the best we can be in all walks of the game.

You can contact Fiery Gatherer or Glinder in-game if interested.
Also Thusfaar, Casevelyn, or Ametrine for Brighthaven Alliance.
