The proper solution is to allow players to respawn at either the closest shrine or some other shrine they control and are "soulbound" to. Respawning at a random shrine still in enemy territory should be a non-starter.

Yup. Indeed, this whole issue will be moot when soulbinding/choosing respawn shrines gets implemented.

…although… what are we all gonna fight about when that happens?

If attackers should have to quit the field so should defenders.
The term victim should not only be applied to the defender either I have heard many times of instances where an attacker was attempting to flee the area and was killed repeatedly trying to flee.

Absolutely: this is why I have been trying to make sure to distinguish between 'spawn-ee' and other characters, instead of 'attacker/defender.' Who the original aggressor was should be irrelevant; the whole point of the discussion should be protecting those who have died and been raised at a shrine.

How difficult would it be to add 1 Thornguard to every shrine in the game?

Would that work? ANYONE attacking someone else near a shrine would bring down the wrath of the TG.

I would usually agree, but look at the trouble they've had getting the thornguards in settlements right…

IF it ever got to a point where NPC protection was needed, COULD we wait 4 months for GW to fix it? My thoughts suggest no.

Also, this isn't meant to demean the work GW is doing or has done; I'm simply recognising the resources/time disparity as it relates to what we have already experienced.

Hey All;

I'm just listening to the PFU chat with Lee from yesterday, and a comment from Lee has me relatively concerned:

"…if you did an…unsanctioned PVP action in the NPC hexes…an agent of Pharasma would show up and beat the crap out of you…The idea was having more newbie protection in those areas…and some protection for major traffic zones…It's not on the schedule right now…I'm not even sure at this point we'll do it…" [emphasis mine]

This shocked me, to be honest. I had been under the assumption that this was one of the key design aspects of PFO: the way PFO would not only protect the 'new player experience,' but also direct the PVP aspects of the game.

So, I'd like to formally open this discussion, and place my vote in to the "we need newbie/protected" areas.

I will note that Lee goes on to mention that they might consider doing this when the population grows, but I would like to point out that making design/programming changes to the game BEFORE they are actually needed seems like a much wiser decision, and a wise use of time/resources, than attempting to scramble and fix a problem while it is potentially getting out of control.

Edit to add: Time of discussion is around 20 minutes in. Link : Keepside chat 08

"/surrendertears?" would work.
I use this as a taunt smile

Guess I'll have to find a new RP "stop your whining" emote…

From what I experienced, Jumping on the spot while standing still has been a "ready" action before a 1v1 fight. That or I misread why people have been jumping in place before 1v1's

You mean, you killed all those people who were simply showing you how excited they were to see you because you thought jumping up and down meant 'go time'?

For shame!

I honestly believe, in this situation, 'we' have to give the recently deceased the benefit of the doubt and ONLY consider them a target again if they ATTACK again, or buff/heal/help someone else who is actively engaged in combat.

Yes, it opens up the possibility of being used as a ruse by the spawned character, but I think it is the only fair thing to do.

I 100% agree, until that Character is known to consistently return to the attack after being given that benefit of the doubt.

I am sorry to have to disagree, but what if that person returns 3 times because he/she wants another go at it, then after 4 deaths decides "nah, I'm done". Just because we know they have a tendency to re-engage does not preclude the fact that they definitely WILL engage.

I am not a fan of the current push to make all classes identical with identical features in some misguided attempt at PvP balance.

Nor am I. I am not condoning 'identical'-ness. Just balance. Way different.
