lol man. Are you in sales in real life?

I can't help but be riveted by your sales pitches.

Is that 34.99 Silver? That seems high. I am a casual player, and playing once or twice a week I have only managed to save up 40 silver since I started playing on Day 1…

@Tink: I do agree that the game needs Speed buffs. I guess I just think that every class should at least have the ability to train them if they wish, and that there was some semblance of balance between the Speed buffs in each class.

Right now only Wizard and Cleric have speed buffs, and Wizard's buff is 2x more powerful.

I would be perfectly comfortable saying "I don't have a Speed buff because I chose not to train it" instead of the current "I don't have a Speed buff because my class does not HAVE one."

when the population grows, and resources become more scarce, you may have no choice but to settle for low quality resources.

EF is a burst group buff, you only need a single staff carrier with a few hours XP invested for your entire group to get it (though it only lasts 2 rounds)

I am not seeing the problem other than that some solo gatherers may be using to get away and there seems to be an assumption in PFO that gatherers are paying $15 a month for the glorious honor of standing around defenceless waiting to be killed by bandits.

I am also sensing a bit of "I made bad role choices that do not work please nerf other roles to fix my character" going on here.

If that last statement was directed at me, it is not true. I am perfectly happy with my character choices. I am NOT happy that every OTHER Fighter in the game carries a staff so that they can use energetic field and weigh the odds of fight in their favour. Like I said, I am really hoping that SF fixes this, but only time will tell.

Daz thinks that his leadership finds shrine camping unacceptable in all circumstances. I am merely providing proof that you have advocated it, and apparently continue to do so.

Rynnik, the guy who threw a class-A tantrum calling me out for it, advocates it too. And he's actually done it (to me no less) whereas I've never done it to anyone. What? Is that not a "fair" and "unbiased" account of what really happened? Yet it's also factually accurate? Funny how folks can twist stuff around when they really want to, isn't it?
Wait what?

Nihimon
Apparently, Phyllain isn't done trying to mine this node.

Nihimon
Rynnik, the guy who threw a class-A tantrum calling me out for it, advocates it too. And he's actually done it (to me no less) whereas I've never done it to anyone.

Every word of that is factually accurate.

Rynnik advocates shrine-camping:

Rynnik
Spawn camping is griefing. There are a few edge cases where it is perfectly acceptable such as curtailing reinforcements to a rolling engagements or to continue to put down people who won't stop reengaging while you attempt to accomplish a tactical goal…

Rynnik has killed me at a shrine, attacking me before I had a chance to act:

Rynnik
… I killed Nihimon at a shrine the other day fully thinking due to a lack of situational awareness that it was a perfect legitimate action when only after the last overdraw was queued up that he was standing at a shrine I hadn't clued into and likely hadn't even loaded in yet.
Why was I surprised by this? I really have been giving you the benefit of the doubt way to much.

Nihimon, try and pretend you understand how reasonable people think for a moment. A reasonable person wouldn't call what you just did factually accurate and consider it an example of 'how easy it is to be manipulative and twist things to your advantage'.

Posts declaiming shrine camping don't get construed as advocating it for reasonable people.

Killing someone once doesn't fit the definition of shrine camping for reasonable people.

Instead reasonable people would look at that and call it a lie and the equivalent of doing this:

Nihimon
I grief. I had a chance to act and You'll have to take my word for it that I've killed anyone at a Shrine without first giving them an opportunity to retreat.

The purpose of that example was to show how easy it is if you're so inclined. But seriously, we've already made clear that we're going to do it.

our goal was always a smear campaign.

This node is depleted.
That was selective editing of your post. Editing that totally mischaracterizes what you said.

If you go into the threads surrounding the actual context of what I said you find that I was defining shrine camping more broadly then just the griefing aspects of it and adjusted my language in order to facilitate mutual understanding with the community. Accordingly, I started using the term more narrowly in use cases after the post you quoted. For example, I was including the act of killing someone that repeatedly attacked you after they spawned as shrine camping. It isn't. The community is clear about that. The community is also clear that no definition of shrine camping would include what I openly and freely admitted had happened in the second post you linked.

There are things you do and things you don't do. Ethics and morals as it were. Some people don't abide by these principles and generally end up being unwelcome in societies.

In the norm of forum communication for example it would be very easy and very wrong to do something like:

Nihimon
I am Nihimon. I am morally corrupt and ethically defunct. A jerk using the simplest terminology. A griefer using gaming lingo.

My broken moral compass leads me to have no defined stance on issues outside of what suits me in a particular situation and while I like to characterize myself as a good person I am actually disgustingly broken as I can't judge right from wrong.

I believe that I have the right to dictate the actions of others and when something is done to me I don't like I reserve the right to do the same or worse to the offender until such time as I am satisfied by causing them distress.

That is why I am struggling so much with this shrine camping issue. Despite my personality flaw not allowing me to understand WHY I keep appearing to the community as the reprehensible jerk that I am, my need for this game to provide escapism from my pathetic existence including my inability to follow ethical norms trumps any other consideration.
That would be 'wrong' in the context of forums because it breaks down aspects of conversation that allow good people to discuss topics with minimal trust in each other to abide by certain norms and therefore be able to be communicated with. Actually doing something like that would make you a jerk.

Oh-oh, I am fighting fire with fire. I guess I am Nihimon.

I understand what you are doing here, Rynnik, but I think that impersonating another player or a member of Goblinworks actually specifically breaks the ToS for the forums. Could you please edit your post to explicitly indicate that those quotes are not Nihimon's, for the ones of us who don' read good.

Speed buffs make the map smaller and y'all know how I feel about that. I'd be perfectly OK with removing most or all speed buffs.

Agreed.

@Rynnik: I have played EVE, and I do agree with the analogy.

The way I see it, there are a few options to fix this:

1. Nerf Speed boosts (as Tig said)
2. Give every class a Speed ability (that are fairly equal)
3. Implement some other sort of balancing factor; maybe increased Stamina costs the faster you move?

I keep hearing "there are legitimate cases", and I'm not prepared to definitively proclaim "there are no legitimate cases", but I cannot think of any specific legitimate cases and I have not seen any specific cases offered which I would agree with.

To my thinking, "there might be legitimate cases but we don't have any specifics to propose" and "there are no legitimate cases" are functionally identical as far as actual practice goes. If all of this is the game philosophy equivalent of the difference between atheism and strong agnosticism, then I think we could probably call it close enough and move on.

Would anyone who wishes to maintain that there are legitimate cases like to offer a sample scenario for discussion? Do you have any specific example in mind where you'd like to make the argument that shrine camping is indeed "perfectly acceptable"?

As usual, couldn't have said it better meself.
