I think it all boils down to Paizo getting PFO to OE and the effectiveness of their marketing plan. The roadmap to minimum viable product is already defined. By now, anyone still hanging on to the game should darn well know what to expect from the OE product.

GW’s bet is “add people, fun will happen”. Except for some polish and some builder level mechanics, what’s we see now IS the game. As a non-builder, non-maker, my game consists of logging in every month or so and spending some xp. Wheeee! All the crunchy bits are buried behind grindy, grindy, boring as heck PvE. However, I can still, sort of, see how adding players could solve that problem. We’re effing there. If what Paizo has set as a the OE goal for player retention does not work, we can pretty soundly label this game as a vanity project from there on out.

I’m not trying to say that the couple of people still working on the game aren’t doing the thing. They’re doing the thing. But we’re waaaay past the point of adding major new mechanics to try and figure out how to make the game “fun” (that question alone is damn frightening). Fully ship that damn Edsel to market and see who wants to drive it. As it is, only a couple dozen players are willing to pay to drive that Edsel until Paizo figure out how to build a Mustang.

Are we going to see OE in 2018?

I think the current answer is that no one knows, but we'll probably find out some time in 2018…ish. smile

Eggnog is nasty, sugary mucus. We’re all old enough to take the Maker’s Mark neat. Save those eggs and sugar for baking cake. smile

But seriously, we need a new road forward post. At the current completion rate (minimum +1 month per EE goal), we are on schedule for a September-ish 2018 OE. Fa la la la laaahhhh la la lah la. smile

Visit the ‘rents in TX and battle breaks out every darn time. And it freaking snowed… Le sigh.

I say again, GW needs to come out of the gate hot to try and fix PvP once they get to OE. This isn’t an issue which would be fixed by the magical ToTs. GW is never going to move away from the PvDoor territory battle system they have. And the current shrine respawn mechanic removes any incentive to use field strategy. It reduces territory battles to a simple numbers game and/or contest of fun attrition (equal numbers can clash against each other until the timer runs out or until everyone is done having fun). If the numbers aren’t equal, why should the outnumbered group even show up?

The only mechanic in the pipeline that has a chance of addressing this is Threading. PvP deaths should send you back to your home settlement until they get Threading up and going. Binding to an allied settlement (or TK) should be the only other PvP thread option, and you should have to physically visit that location to activate that bind point over your home settlement. And you should have to visit that new bind point (or your home settlement) to turn it off. Leave camps, freeholds, NPCs settlements, and the many shrines for PvE deaths.

Some people may rail against this, as it removes some of the current easy-mode play, and it can’t address some of the basic problems that are built into the current territory system, but I think it’s the best first step. Having brand new ToTs experience the current, same old systems will only repeat the mass exodus of players that happened when people tried to really battle the first times. The FW was only good for buying cheap DTs and Smallholds from quitting players.

Or we can try and set up some ‘let’s pretend we’re playing a game’ rules. smile

At 2000 players in this scenario (the Two of Thousands), GW's cost to host 6000 accounts would need to be the same as the cost of them hosting 2000 accounts. In the ten of thousands dream, that's 10,000 accounts or 30,000 accounts for the same revenue. But…I have no idea what GW's costs are or what their expected return is on getting PFO up and running.

Dofus charges $5 a month and they still have millions of players (despite the current downward spiral of population). Dofus looks and plays like a $5 game. Maybe PFO is a $5 game? That seems like a pretty drastic change from setting out to build a $15/mo game. Still, this is all on GW. I haven't seen them hemming and hawing over price…yet. I would guess that the OE rollout is going to be in line with the current sub and xp model, and that the monthly price only has a little wiggle room in it. Who knows?

I wouldn't try and push is lower than $9.99 for the basic account (3 slots, one xp stream). From there, I'd suggest allowing up to two additional xp streams at $5 each per month. You cant price 5/10/15 because if you're going to spend $15, there's no reason to not have three $5 accounts and six more character slots. There's still a little bit of that going on in the price setup I'm talking about, but you'd have to pay more for those alts. And $5 is too cheap. OK…how's $9.95 sound? smile

As a melee-who-moves type, the number of attacks missing due to LoS (while in groups of enemies) is really high. But I think we can get used to esc tab. Like how stop is sx. smile It's the simplest solution, it's just frustrating because by the time you need to switch, you're already three LoS blocked melee attacks in. If it's actually a big deal, you have to get the heck out or heal up by then.

Losing a target is a good part of this LoS, and hunting down lost targets of interest is a fun option. Some attacks like Cleave which Stilachio mentioned, could override LoS and add a lot of flavor. There are some strong melee attacks with range that would fit right in. Just one per weapon though, like the melee version of running attack not slowing bow users.

It would be nice for melee to have 1 or so meters not affected by LoS. If I can slap you, I should be able to stab you. Just thicken up all the walls a little first. smile

Can we just get (or do we have already?) a target closest enemy button?
